What’s Coming Out This Month? March 2011

March 2nd, 2011 No comments

Well, February went by without major releases (Bulletstorm here , Killzone there… nothing major :) ), hopefully you saved some money for March. It’s a crazy month.

First – a little PSN treat – PixelJunk Shooter 2 is set to hit the stores today, at a price of 9.99$ – you just cant go wrong with this game.

What seems at start like a cute twin stick shooter with some elements turned out to be a really charming experience and an awesome 2 player local co-op experience. If the second one is anything like the first (and the reviews say it is) – it should be great.

The second game this month is Pokemon Black / White for the Nintendo DS – on March 4th.

For those of you raising your eyebrows over this title – You should really give this frenchise a try.

This is not a small kids game and each title in the series serves as a reminder that the games were here before the kids tv series.

Don’t be fooled by the cute childish graphics – Pokemon is a serious RPG monster collecting series with a lot of strategy and classic JRPG elements. This title pro misses to keep to the classic formula with minor improvements to the battles – presenting a new 3 characters battle system.

On March 8th comes the more important release of this month – Dragon Age 2 from Bioware (perhaps one of my favorite game companies).

While the first one was a bit of an unsung game which a lot of people missed (especially after being greatly overshadowed by Mass effect 2 from the same company that came soon after and being released in a pretty bad time and mediocre version for the consoles) – Bioware took some time to rethink the title and how it plays and is bringing to the table a much more coherent action RPG.

From the looks of the demo – much has changed – the entire style of play moved from a classic Baldur’s Gate style (which this game was kind of it’s successor) to a more Witcher style action combat with some radial battle pausing party control menu.

To me the demo felt really fresh and I’m looking forward to see if the full experience will indeed combine the good story and design of the first one with a better suited mechanic for the consoles.

3 more releases worth mentioning in a few words:

Crysis 2 Is coming to consoles and PC this march 22.

The successor to one of the more graphically advanced FPS games is promising to bring new graphics to the table and present another leap forward (and perhaps a torture test to the current gen of computers and especially graphic cards).

Lego Star Wars 3 – The current game in the Lego universe brings Star wars the clone wars story arch to the beloved Lego world games.

While the demo is nice, and I feel the Star Wars universe suits the Lego mechanics best (by design, humor and gameplay) the demo kind of lacks innovation and looks a bit of more of the same.

If you loved it before – You’ll love it now.

Though not a game release but rather a hardware release – the Nintendo 3DS is also being released this month.

Nintendo is bringing us for the first time a glassless 3D experience, the Dual screen design of the DS together with more graphic horse power and the top screen is a 3d screen with no need of glasses.

The current price point for the system is 250$. A bit steep in my opinion.

The 3D looks like a nice gimmick but the system (in my opinion) looks like it kind of lacks real innovation, price advantage or good game lineup.

But hey, It’s Nintendo – They proven us wrong more then once.

2 (actually kind of 3) more gaming related news:

Beginning with the local one – PSN Store has arrived to Israel , after 4.5 years of promises – Ishphar – the local representative fulfils its promise to bring a local PSN store.

While DLC and online content price is almost on par with the European store – Games that have a physical media version have outraging prices (probably in order not to compete with the high price point of games in retails in Israel). Well , I guess that you can’t win them all.

A local store to buy DLC with a local credit card is better then nothing.

The second news item is the announcement that came during February of the Playstation portal device future.

Sony’s strategy is divided to 2 devices:

  • Android base phone and suite – using a regular Android platform to bring the PS world to your phone – more hardcore then angry birds – less hardcore then PS3.
  • NGP – Sony’s next PSP iteration – together with a quad core arm CPU and quad core GPU (think of the current iPhone hardware X 4 – same architecture both for the CPU and GPU) – it promises a PS3 level of graphics in the portable world.

I have to say both of the devices are very intriguing. Meanwhile only basic tech specs and some titles were discussed – But I’ll probably go over the details as the devices come closer to final product.

The third bit of news is the apple conference that’s suppose to start sometime today (March 2nd). iPad 2 – here we come :)

Have a good month – and more updates as they come (and I have a feeling this time – they will come)

Interested in developing for the iPhone? First Steps…

January 18th, 2011 No comments

I know more then one of these guides is out there and most of them are saying about the same stuff, but what the hell – I’ll write one myself giving my insights and my recommendations.

A bout two month ago I decided to broaden my knowledge a bit by picking up a subject that interested me for a while – iPhone Programing.

Along the way I used a few sources and decided to make a short list of what would you need to start getting into this.

Lets begin with what you must have:

A Mac:

Always surprises some people for some reason. iPhone’s IDE runs only on an Apple computer. Doesn’t really matter which (assuming it’s an Intel based computer).

Even the most basic Mac Mini will run it properly without any problems.

Regarding a Hackintosh or a Virtual machine – It’s nice to play with it around a bit, don’t count on it for being a normal solution. There are a lot of little issues with this (except the being illegal part).

An Apple Developer account:

Well Basically there are 3 options to chose from here:

  • Free Account – Allows you to develop, compile and run in the simulator. Practically – all you need to study and practice programing for the iPhone is here. The tools are in no way limited or partial – Just the same as any other company or developer uses.
  • Paid Developer’s Account – 100$ a year will get you on top of the tools and being able to run the simulator, the option to test your applications on a real iPhone (or iPad) and submit apps to Apple’s AppStore (two words on the model – Apps are hosted for free, if they are paid apps – 30% goes to Apple, 70% to you)
  • Company Developer Account – A few extras – out of this post’s scope

Download X Code:

After you opened a developer account (or before – you can create it there) go to Apple’s iOS Dev Center and Start Downloading the latest xCode with iOS sdk.

Development Knowledge:

This is one that is in my opinion a must. Most information sources I found assume you know how to program and that the term design pattern does not sound like a curse to you. You might be able to do well without it, however for an entirely new developer learning this as a first language – I think most will get lost pretty fast.

Your still reading? Good, now is time to learn.

There are many good places to start from, in fact – enough to confuse you. I’ll give a few that I found useful.

The Book Option:

APress released a very good book regarding iPhone development – Beginning iPhone 3 Development.

The book gives nice examples and walks you through creating a couple of nice projects. The book is however light on the technical details. At the code level – if you don’t understand what the code is doing – you’ll mostly be copying it and not really understanding a lot of the technical underlaying of the platform (in terms of code , types , memory management, function types etc.). If you already know Objective-C – that probably wont pose a problem. For the rest of you – it might.

Here is a link to the revised version of the book (for iPhone 4 which should include iPad specific chapters as well) : Beginning iPhone 4 Development. Note the book is Due to Jan 31st.

iTunesU – The academic Option:

iTunesU is a great platform for academical knowledge. Stanford University is giving a course – CS139P – iPhone Application Development.

The good news – you can view all the lectures (even in HD) simply by downloading them from iTunes store – Just search “developing apps for ios” and get all the lectures.

For the lecture slideshows you can go to the course’s site and get all the PDFs of the slideshows and the homeworks.

Do note – the course is pretty hard and technical and at times – just runs with the material at a crazy speed. Also the Interface Builder is barely used and the templates are hardly touched which might be a bit nice to know how to use them better for real world applications rather then coding everything from scratch.

The level of the knowledge that can be drawn from the course though is very high and even the small things are must knows when you really want to understand what’s going on.

(Do note – that every year or semester this course is re-done so by the time you read this – there might be a running, more current version of the course).

Apple’s Documentation:

Will suite you better when you know what your looking for but double clicking a command inside xCode with alt/option will let you see Apple’s Documentation. Also you can go to iOS Reference Library for guides and code examples.

WWDC Sessions:

Each year Apple has a developer convention where some of it’s developers give classes on various topics. This year’s videos have been uploaded and are available for free to registered developers (even free accounts) – just log in from the Session Videos Page.

In plus of these data sources many sites and blogs are out there covering iPhone development from various angles (also a lot of technical forums have sections on iPhone development) so it’s always a good idea to look around.

I’ll be glad to here some of your insights on this and learn about new places to learn from if I missed any (and I’m sure I did).

App-Store has arrived to Mac

January 6th, 2011 No comments

After making a revolution in the smart-phone world – Apple’s App Store is arriving to all Snow Leopard Macs with 10.6.6 update that was released today. What started at the iPhone might just come and change the way we purchase software on the mac.

It is still early to tell if it will have the same impact it had on the iPhone when it was released (in my opinion – it was one of the iPhone’s best features, in fact – it still is). No doubt it will increase the accessibility of mac software around the world and give an easier buying method for mac users. I encountered this problem more then once – Trying to get a mac version of a software. Now that a unified mechanism with an already trusted pay model will exist – I have no doubt it will increase my purchases on this platform.

On the developer side – Releasing a program on the mac holds the same costs as a developer as the iPhone – meaning it will be a 100$ a year annual subscription. The profit model will be kept as well – meaning – Hosting of the applications will not cost you, and from the price of the application – 70% goes to the developer and 30% to Apple.

I also believe it will become a significant platform for new developers to reach a lot of target buyers and mac users easily. In general it is a bold step forward towards digital distribution as the main software purchasing method at a major scale that has not been done before for a personal computer platform (that goes beyond games).

Take a look here – Apple’s App Store Page.

More updates and perhaps a short review hopefully soon,

Sign Me Out – iPhone App you paranoids must own!

October 21st, 2010 No comments

A friend of mine recently wrote and published an ultra-cool iPhone app called Sign Me Out.

The application gives you the ability at any time to check if other computers are connected to your Facebook or Gmail accounts and sign them out!

This is important in some scenarios – I’ll give a few I thought about just of the top of my head:

  • Forgot your Gmail or Facebook logged a public computer
  • Forgot your Gmail or Facebook logged at work or at home
  • Afraid someone might be messing with your accounts and invading your privacy

Its extremely friendly and easy to use and implemented in a great method using the features Facebook and Gmail give you.

Give it a try – and don’t be afraid to leave a positive review and spread the word.

And remember – the fact that your paranoid – doesn’t mean they ain’t following you :)

Click to go to the Application’s Page.

iPhone – First Steps Continued

iPhone 4

iPhone 4

Well – due to some success and feedback on the first section I did on the iPhone – for now I’ll add some iPhone relevant info and share some knowledge I gathered over the period I had the iPhone in small bits.

So this time – a site to get your Apps same way as in Installous, some classic console emulators and an important tip before syncing apps for the first time with a computer.

As some of you might have noticed – Installous (especially when downloading big files) does not seem to have such a reliable download manager.

Sometimes you would like to download the Application directly to your computer and Sync it with iTunes rather then download it to the phone.

Doing this is extremely easy since Installous is a reflection of a web site that does excacly that: Meet apptrackr.org – A web representation of Installous.

Note: The files from this site can only be synced to a Jailbroken iPhone that has Installous or some other App Sync crack installed.

Second thing on our agenda are emulators. One of the best things you can get through Cydia is emulators for classic consoles.

The current emulators for the iPhone are really nice – supporting true multi tasking and downloading and managing saves and games directly from the app.

Currently the following Emulators exist:

  • Super Nintendo – SNES A.D.X +
  • Nintendo Entertainment System – NES A.D.X +
  • Genesis / MegaDrive – GENESIS A.D.X +
  • Game Boy Color – GBC A.D.X +
  • Playstation1 – PSX4ALL (further article regarding running this one – coming later this week or next week – if people will ask for it)

All these emulators can be downloaded from Cydia (Look at my last guide and the repositories for a surprise version of most of them :) )

TIP: This tip is priceless so remember to do it.

On the first sync with an iTunes - especially in case you already downloaded and are using some apps – Right click on the Phone in iTunes – Transfer Purchases.

This will download all applications currently installed on the iPhone and save them locally on your iTunes.

Also – be sure you are logged into the iTunes Store with the same user as the phone.

Enjoy,

Liviu
